Sebastian Horsley
2011
acrylic and varnish on canvas
Sebastian was kind enough to pose for me back in October of 2008. He said he liked my sketch because I had caught the pain in his eyes.
As I sketched he told me about how he was disappointed that his crucifixion had not left any scars. When I can to paint it, a dribble of red down the middle of the canvas crossed his hands, it resembled a stigmata so I left it there and exaggerated the effect.

Surrounding Sebastian are a couple of sunflowers, a recurring motif in his work. I doubt I'll ever be able to view these flowers in the same light after seeing the church full of them during his funeral service.
Behind his hand is a shark jawbone, sharks being another subject that fascinated him as an artist.
